I'm not sure I'm liking the stinger look on my XJ.

I either need to finish the stinger.

or start over with more of just a hood guard hoop.

or go back to nothing...

I never really understood the purpose of stingers. Whether to keep you from rolling forward or to keep you hood from getting crushed on a rollover, it still looks very odd.

I like the hoops designed on ARB's bumper.

I don't like the look of stingers much either, but I've seen them save some people on nose dives, so they need to be strong enough to hold if you actually are rolled onto the nose, so the side supports are needed I think.
Then if they are just a little higher then the hood, they protect the header panel and radiator in a roll over.

The small hoop won't protect from the nose dive.

Stinger 101

A stinger should be high enough to give some support to the hood so that it doesn't push down into the motor as bad in a roll over. And be far enough forward to, if not stop a nose over, at least tilt the vehicle to the side so that it doesn't nose over directly onto the roof.

Of course, I could be making all of that up....

totally on topic, shows why he should keep it and put proper side supports on it, when built right they serve a very good purpose. I was not a big fan until that happened and now I know they are worth doing and doing right. He has a very good start of one, just needs the proper bracing to work effectively

If you stick with the stinger, definitely put some side supports on it. They way you've got it now, it's really just a show piece.

I'm not a fan of that "hood guard hoop" at all. If you're going to do something like that, make the side hoops the same height as the center hoop, with some crossbars btwn the headlights and the turn signals, more along the lines of the ARB bullbar grille guard.

Something more like this:

I'm also partial to hoop-less bumpers though. ;)

It's been the plan all along to brace it. But after I put it on there, I wasn't sure I liked the look. I think I might bring it a bit more up (more to vertical, by a few degrees) that might help the look, and not effect things if I get into a situation where I'd need it.

A bit off topic, but very nice video:cheers:
