I should note, we're talking fastest production cars here.

It replaced the Bugatti Veyron as the world's fastest car when it was unveiled in 2006, with a top speed almost 20 mph more, not to mention a price tag of around $500,000 less. But Bugatti is already working on a new model of the Veyron to try and regain their long-held top spot.

It's validity has been speculated, though, and some believe the new Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero is the world's fastest production car - posting a speed of 257 mph, though wind tunnel tests showed it could reach 273 mph - it just ran out of road. Guinness has never acknowledged either the Bugatti or the Barabus, however, which means their records are "unofficial," despite being recorded. Personally, I prefer the looks of the Italian-designed Barabus TKR, so if I had my pick, I'd go with it.

But that's according to the fine people at the Guinness Book of World Records. If I'm not mistaken, neither the Barabus TKR or the Bugatti Veyron were acknowledged by Guinness. But...
