My girlfriend is interested in getting a GC. She likes the looks of the older models but does not want IFS (god i love her!) Since we are looking, i'm wondering what you guys suggest i look for and avoid?

Thanks

I like the 98 ZJ.. but thats just me..
Those are nice. My friend's mother had one and we took it off road (SHHHH). I could not tell that i was actually off roading. It's THAT smooth.

2001-2004. Better V8 (better on fuel/lots of power), nicer interior styling...Unless you're wheelin' it...ZJ's have a lot more parts for less $$$$...but if it's a mostly street driven DD, then definitely go for the WJ over the ZJ...IMHO.

No offense ZJ guys, but the WJ is nicer!

Ha!

199-2004, FTW!!!

And they didn't have IFS until 05....
I didn't know they made jeeps back in 199. That's 1809 years in production. Wow.

The only ZJ's to get the AW4 were the first 1/3 of '93 behind the 4.0 after that they all got the 4.0 got the 42re Junk box behind it..
Care to elaborate on why it's junk? I'm not too familiar with that box.

Most of the GC owners that I've spoken with have to rebuild the trannys pretty quick, compared to what the AW-4 lifespan is. I just assumed that the 4.0 versions all used the AW-4 like the XJs, but obviously the manufacturers know more than we do!! Sometimes you got to wonder WTF they are thinking when they do stupid stuff like that!!

Jeep did to the 42re what GM used to do to the Cadillac tranny's, to make it shift smoother they build it to slip between gears. And in a rig used off road or even used to tow that eats the thing right up. It took talking to alot of tranny shops and dealer mechanics to find out what was killing them. To give you a idea my '94 is on it's 4th tranny and that one is starting to have issues.
