I want to put a winch on my XJ. To accomplish this I was originally going to purchase the "backbone" system from DetoursUSA, as this would allow me to keep my nice factory front bumper and run a winch.

Then a auto parts driver made a u-turn in front of me while I was doing 40 mph...

I got $700 so it wasn't all bad, still it scared me. The thought that someone, including me, could take away my beloved XJ in an instant, well I switched my thinking from minimal front bumper protection to BULL BAR bumper. For a time I considered the ARB bumper, but I'd really like to have something a little more edgy, and something that has a little style.

Someone posted here a picture of a Liberty with this bumper on it.

The bumper is made by Trail Ready, but the bumper they make for the XJ is just plain ugly (to me).

I am considering designing and having a custom bumper built similar to this one. I would have rectangular light ports in the bumper to accommodate my factory driving/fog lights, instead of the round ones you see in this picture.

I've done some digging around the Internet and I cannot find anything ready made that looks anything like this for the XJ. I though one of you might know of something...

I know I can build something along those lines for an XJ, in fact you draw it out exactly like you want it and that's exactly what you'll get. I know there's not a lot of the custom work shown on my website but we've done quite a few bumpers locally that are similar to that style and definitely stout.

Mostly the local bumpers we make are for people who hit a lot of deer and at $500 a whack for a deductible...that adds up quick.

Yea, those things seem to jump out infront of EVEYBODY here. I'm actually more afraid of hitting a deer rather than a car.

You sir have just made it to the top of my "where to look for a new front bumper" list

Not holding you to a price but do you think a custom "heavy" bumper like the one show here on the Liberty could be built for the cost of the ARB heavy bumper?

So was there any damage to your cherokee?

1. Fender bent
2. Bumper end cap minor damage
3. White pant from the dumb ass's truck.
4. Bumper end cap deep cut.
5. Bumper end cap cut.

I popped the fender in when I got to work.

All in all very minor damage.

The bumper was pushed in maybe an 1/8 of an inch.

I saw this on an Auto Zone parts delivery truck. Oreily's needs one of these. :D

I went back after the accident on the way home, and took a picture of the approximate place where this guy turned in front of me. Here is the picture.

I was in the "fast lane" and he was in the "slow lane". He turn right in front of me.

I understand. I'm not going to have my XJ on the rocks, so I am less concerned about approach angles than I am about protection. Also I want to have my OEM driving lights mounted in the bumper, so I need the extra room.

No I figure this would be at least a $700 to $800 bumper like the ARB bumper.

Wow, i'm surprised at how little damage there is on your XJ compared to the damage on the Ranger.....then again it is a Cherokee  Good idea to get more front end protection. I want to but every time I turn around my $$$ runs away....

I didn't mention something. All the pictures were sent to their insurance company, and was the reason for taking them in the first place.

Also if I had hit futher forward on that little pickup, or didn't have lighten fast reflexes braking, it could have been much worse. That was the point. Someone does something stupid and a vehicle that you've had for years, and taken good care of is gone.

Ain't that the truth. I had a VW that I loved and took great care of, and expected to get at least another 5 years out of. One night at a stop light, I'm minding my own business, singing along to some tunes with my pretty little lady sitting next to me, when.... WHAM!!! Old lady in a Subaru plows into the back of me going 45 mph. Busts my black glass, twists the unibody (the roof had a "V" in it), causes me to hit the car in front of me, and puts my girlfriend in a neck brace. My nerves were shot for months after that -- everytime I saw headlights in the rearview my heart would skip a beat.

BUT, on a positive note - my girlfriend (now my ex, but still a good friend) healed up fine, and we both bought Jeeps with our settlements. :D The lady had no explanation for what happened. It was a three lane intersection, three stop lights on the wire, and three lanes of brake lights in front of her. You just never know.

I was that way driving in the rain after my XJ spun on me. Glad to hear it all worked out. The $700 bumper and tire carrier I just put on wouldn't survive a 45 mph rear in collision, but I bet it will do a lot better than the EOM bumper!!! :D
