2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited - rear wheel whomp noise?

I am new to this forum. We recently purchased a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited from a dealership. 35k miles. The vehicles had all of the specs we were looking for and the price was fair. When we test drove it, we heard some rear wheel noise, but attributed it to the tires (which weren't the best match for the vehicle). The dealership rotated the tires for us before we bought it. This was our first SUV (we always drove sedans), so we were not familiar with what noises to expect from a larger vehicle.

We had the car inspected by our local mechanic and he happened to notice tooling marks on the bolts of the rear differential. Like someone previously had worked on it. Otherwise, the car was in good working order. I brought the car back to the dealership and they replaced the rear brakes, thinking that may be the cause of the sound. They checked the bearings, and they were fine. The rear noise seemed to get a bit better, but it was still there. So we had the tires "forced" balance by a tire shop. Again, the noise was a bit better, but still there. We then swapped out the tires with my son's SUV, since the tires were the same size and his were only a few months old, he was selling his car soon anyway. The ride was smoother, but, we still hear a whomp, whomp, sound in the rear of the vehicle very clearly on smooth roads when driving over 55MPH. The gear shifter vibrates a little as well.

We can still exchange the car at this point. Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this whomp sound in the rear of the vehicle? With the low inventory of used vehicles, I don't know that I will find a car with all the features I want, so I would like to be fairly certain that this could be a major issue before I return the car. I plan to tow a boat with this vehicle and I need to know that it is sound.

Thank you for your input.
