Are you going to be building/installing it yourself, or do you have a fabricator or pre-fabbed cage in mind?

 

A local fabricator/buddy of mine fabbed up this exo cage

 

Maybe I can't see it but how do you open the rear doors?

 

Maybe a lap joint?

I was seriously considering one. But now I am building an internal cage. The reason being is that the purpose of a cherokee is to be light weight. Adding a exo cage will add way too much weight. Also, the price of tubing is not all that cheap. I guess there nice to kind of protect your body, but still, they are extremely heavy.

 

And they also attract police attention if it's a street-driven vehicle.

 

My jeep is like a target for cops. So i guess i definately shouldnt do an exo cage. I thin that the A and B pillars are strong enough to protect me. Ill end up throwin a stinger on the front eventually for a little add taste but im not goin any farther than that most likely :cheers:

 

No, the A piller is not strong enough to protect you in a full roll. It's one thing to flop it onto its side, but another thing if you do a full roll or an end-over type of roll. Those A-pillars will waffle and the front of the roof will cave right in.

Dave my idea for an XO is something that is as light as posible, removable & or maybe integrated into the XJ it's self. I really don't want to lose any functional aspect of the XJ, just enhance the survivability of it. I do understand that there are a lot of variables, but I just would like to cover as many basis I can to minimize the chance of a structure failure. I'm going to ask a lot out of my XJ & hopefully I can keep a reasonable expectation out of this craziness! Wish me luck!

A guy in my club just built an exo-hybrid. It came out really nice, and it's quite functional. The A pillars are tied into the Rock Sliders, then he also has a B- and C-pillar that go up through the roof of the XJ. Here's a pic:

yea getting out sucks, i have to turn completly around to face the rear of the jeep to take the leap of faith....only to twist an ankle or stub a toe 9/10 times

 

I think it's because the door is a weird shape and your jumping out over the wheel well.

That looks great Dave! I'd like to see the interior. I've got a few ideas & I need all the space in the XJ.

 

No pics of the interior, sorry. The A pillar doesn't run through the interior at all, it follows the factory A-pillar along the exterior, cuts through the fender, and down to the rock slider. The B-Pillar comes down right behind the front seats, and out as close as possible to the factory B-Pillar. The C-pillar comes through the roof as well, and runs right along the factory C-pillar by the hatch.

 

That's perfect! That is exactly what I had in mind. I could modify the top into a roof rack as well. Now for some special compartment's for my tools & firearms!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
